Crazy Callus Stories
Jimi Hendrix - C'mon Baby, Light My Fire
Everyone has seen the famous photo of Jimi burning his Fender. But did you know he did the same thing to his fingertips? That's right, Jimi used to run his fingertips over an open flame to build callus strength. Perhaps it was his free spirit or maybe just the massive amounts of LSD that led him to do this, but regardless, burning your fingertips is not a safe way to build calluses.
Super Glue Stevie
This callus story is pretty well known but we decided to include it anyway. Stevie Ray Vaughn played using extremely thick gauge strings. As a result his calluses took a serious beating and often they would fall off before a show. Stevie's solution - glue 'em back on. Stevie carried a bottle of Crazy Glue to all his gigs.
Clapton's Alcoholism
Quite possibly the least crazy of our callus stories is that of Eric Clapton who routinely doused his fingers in "Surgeon's Spirit," aka rubbing alcohol. Admittedly, we must approve of Clapton's resourcefulness as isopropyl alcohol is one of the active ingredients in Finger Strong! Not to be outdone however, we conducted a series of tests comparing the effectiveness of Finger Strong vs. straight alcohol and found that Finger Strong produced much stronger calluses in nearly half the time and that straight alcohol was only slightly more effective than not using anything at all!
